PERFORMANCE ON 1993 USMLE EXAMINATIONS
USMLE Step 1
The number of examinees tested and the percent passing for Step 1 in 1993 are shown in Table 1; the NBME figures include examinees from osteopathic schools. Approximately the same number of examinees registered by the NBME sat for Step 1 in 1992 and 1993; however, the number of examinees registered by ECFMG® almost doubled during this time period. The pass rates of 88% for all NBME-registered examinees and 43% for all ECFMG-registered examinees in 1993 are slightly higher than in 1992.

Examinee Performance on Step 2
The number of examinees tested and pass rates for the September 1992 and the March and September 1993 Step 2 administrations are shown in Table 2. As with Step 1, counts for NBME-registered examinees were slightly higher compared to recent years; ECFMG counts, however, increased significantly.
The pass rates for NBME-registered examinees of 93%, 91%, and 92% on the last three Step 2 administrations are slightly lower than the pass rate of 95% observed for the September 1991 examination. Pass rates for ECFMG-registered examinees decreased slightly from 43% in September 1991 to 39% and 40% in September 1992 and March 1993 but were the same for September 1993 (43% pass rate).
